what to expect if you are having surgery

When your surgery is scheduled, you will receive a pre-surgical instruction booklet customized for you. This booklet will contain comprehensive information about your operation, how to prepare for your procedure, and other important information.

In most cases, you will have a pre-operative visit in our office approximately two weeks before your surgery. (Special arrangements may be available for out of town guests.) Final payment for your procedure is also due at this time. Please visit with your patient coordinator about any help you need with financial arrangements.

Most of Dr. Ratliff’s surgeries are performed in our on-site, state-of-the-art operating room which is part of our office facility. This is a huge convenience for our patients and their families.

Before the operation you will meet with your surgical nurse, change clothes, and receive pre-op care and instructions. Those who are accompanying you are welcome to remain in our waiting room and enjoy coffee and even wireless Internet access!

When the surgery is over you will be monitored in our recovery area until it is time to return home. You will need to have a designated adult driver available to drive you. You will not be allowed to drive after your surgery.

Before leaving, you will be given follow-up instructions and prescriptions for medications. Importantly, our nurses and Dr. Ratliff are available to you anytime, day or night, whenever you have questions or need help with your care after surgery.

If your operation is to take place in a hospital setting, the surgery will be performed at St. John Medical Center, which is less than a mile from our location. Use this link to visit the St. John Medical Center Web site.
