Breast Augmentation

For many women, breast augmentation surgery has changed their lives. If you are thinking about breast augmentation there are many things to consider.

Who Needs It?

Breast augmentation surgery, often simply referred to as getting breast implants, is available to women of all ages. In our practice, we typically see women who are between their early 20s and mid-50s, with most of our patients falling into the 19-34 age range.

Body type and the anatomy of your breasts are important factors we will consider in determining the specific procedure you may need and the outcome that is possible for you. For example, in order to achieve the look they desire, women with certain types of breasts may need a breast lift, along with breast implants. This is because drooping or sagging breast tissue is generally not corrected with a saline or silicone implant. On the other hand, women with small breasts can often benefit from breast augmentation only.

We will work closely with you to determine which procedure or procedures are necessary for you to attain the look you desire.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Once you have made the decision to have breast augmentation surgery, schedule your free consultation with Dr. Greg Ratliff. On your first visit, you can expect to accomplish:

  • a complete understanding of your goals and expectations
  • a physical examination and assessment of your health history
  • a discussion of the procedures Dr. Ratliff believes will best help you reach your goals
  • a review of before and after images of women with body types similar to yours that can help you visualize your end results
  • a discussion of what you can expect before, during, and after surgery
  • a discussion of risks or potential complications of surgery
  • complete answers to ALL of your questions

If you decide to move forward with your surgery, you will be asked to help make various decisions about your care. These may include the type of implant you will have, its size and shape, the location of your incision, and the placement or position of the implant. Of course, Dr. Ratliff will give you recommendations that will help you make those decisions. Click here to learn more about implants.

Surgery -- What to Expect

Your breast augmentation procedure is an outpatient procedure and will be performed in one of the state-of-the-art operating rooms in our Cherry Street location. One of the many benefits of having surgery at Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa is the fact that we have everything available for you -- from first consultation to postop care -- right here in one location!

During your procedure, you will be under general anesthesia. Implants are inserted into the breasts and centered beneath the nipples. Great care is taken to make the incisions in the least conspicuous area possible. Your incision is closed with stitches and tape may also be used to help support the area. A gauze bandage is applied for support.

Following surgery, you are moved to one of our patient recovery rooms. Your family and friends are welcome to wait for you in our comfortable waiting area. You will need to have a designated adult available to drive you home after surgery.

Once you return home, you can expect to be tired and sore for the first few days. Medicine will be prescribed to help control any discomfort you may have. You may be instructed to wear gauze dressing and a surgical bra during the first several days. You should be able to return to work within a few days after your operation, although your breasts may be sensitive for several weeks. We will advise you about returning to your normal activities.

Your Results

It is normal to have some swelling and bruising. This will diminish the first few weeks after surgery. Typically, we have our patients come back in for follow up visits at approximately 1 week, 3 weeks, and then again in 6 weeks. By this time in your healing process should be well underway.

Although not everyone has the same postop experience, we encourage you to visit the Before and After Patient Gallery to view breast augmentation patients before surgery and at their 6-week postop visit to get a idea of what you can expect.

Every member of the Plastic Surgery Center of Tulsa staff has one goal in mind, to provide outstanding personal service to you and your family.

However, it is important to remember that plastic surgery is an operation, not a commodity or an event to be taken lightly. Always think carefully about any surgery you are considering, and obtain the right help. Dr. Greg Ratliff has the skills and expertise to help you make the right decision for you.
